Dr Roy Ackerman CBE FIH

Roy Ackerman – ‘inspirational leader’, ‘well-liked’ and ‘respected’, are words often used to describe him. His public and personal careers have marked him out nationally, and in recent years internationally, as a respected figure in the hospitality industry. He represents Britain over four continents as Chairman of the World Master of Culinary Arts. This, coupled with his five years of Awards throughout Europe, for the Café Crème Guide, has put him on the world stage.

Roy Ackerman was awarded an OBE in 1990 for his contribution to tourism and training whilst Chairman of the Restaurant Association of Great Britain. Subsequently he served an additional 5 years as President of the Restaurant Association of Great Britain and 10 years as the Chairman of the Hotel and Catering Training Board now the Hospitality Training Foundation. During his time as Chairman he led the privatisation procedure from public to private body. He remains involved as Chairman of the Honorary Members of the Academy of Culinary Arts and assists the Academy of Food and Wine Service, whenever time permits, chairing conferences and training initiatives. He is always on hand for advice and help to these organisations.

In recent years he has helped or backed, amongst others, leading chefs, Giorgio Locatelli, Brian Turner, Antony Worrall Thompson and Maître d’ Elena Salvoni with whom he set up a restaurant under her name. He actively supports various charities and his business life is equally fulfilling. He has been given every honour available from the trade academies and associations and in 2003, as a tribute to founding the Henley Festival of Music and the Arts, was made Honorary President to celebrate its 21st year. Roy was awarded a CBE in 2004 for services to Gastronomy.
